@itsBBU released “bell hooks” mixtape this morning.
Opening with a spoken word piece, and transitioning into a medley of dance beats, Kurt Cobaine revival, an interlude featuring a critical skit on “urban” music, odes to love, more poetry (mad props to EPIC on his PSA), hard tuff rap, and an outro that’ll make you giggle.
They’ve released sprinklings of the mixtape over the past year, collaborating with a diverse crew of beat makers (Montana Macks, Stefan Ponce) and rap lyricists (GLC, Das Racist).
BBU is the essence of outlaw and disruptive culture. Props to the shout-out in the beginning of the mixtape “young queer kids that never fit in your scene,” for directly bringing queerness into the rap scene (has this been done before ya’ll??). Just from talking to Jasson, I sense an air of humility when he talks about BBU…ain’t no thang. They all really care about community organizing and critical engagement with touchy issues like race and class that don’t rely solely on irony to make it fun to swallow- they prefer the suckerpunch method. Support these hoodlums.
